Global Update (non-endemic countries): As of 10 January 2023, 84,471 confirmed cases of mpox and 285 deaths were reported from 110 countries/territories globally. The countries reporting the majority of cases are mainly in Europe and the Americas.
Africa update (endemic and non-endemic countries): Since the beginning of 2022, the continent has reported 1,267 confirmed cases and 226 deaths (CFR: 17.8%) of mpox from eight endemic Africa Union (AU) Member States (MS): Benin (3 confirmed cases; 0 confirmed deaths), Cameroon (18; 3), Central African Republic (CAR) (13; 3), Congo (5; 3), Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) (319; 204), Ghana (116; 4), Liberia (6; 0), Nigeria (756; 7) and five non-endemic MS: Egypt (4; 0), Morocco (3; 0), Mozambique (1; 1), South Africa (5; 0) and Sudan (18; 1). Five MS have not reported mpox cases in the last three months: Benin, Congo, Morocco, Sierra Leone and South Africa. This week, five new confirmed cases and no new deaths of mpox were reported from Liberia (2 cases; 0 deaths) and Nigeria (3; 0).
Liberia: Since the last update (4 November 2022), the MoH reported two new confirmed cases and no new deaths of mpox. There is a 100% increase in the number of new confirmed cases reported compared to the last update. Cumulatively, six confirmed cases and no deaths of mpox were reported from four counties: Grand Bassa, Montserrado, Maryland and Bomi.
Nigeria: Since the last update (23 December 2022), the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported three new confirmed cases and no new deaths of mpox. This is a 94% decrease in the number of new confirmed cases reported compared to the last update. Cumulatively, 756 confirmed cases and seven deaths (CFR: 1%) of mpox were reported from 36 states and the federal capital.

Africa update (endemic and non-endemic countries): Since the beginning of 2022, the continent has
reported 1,262 confirmed cases and 226 deaths (CFR: 18%) of mpox from eight endemic Africa Union
(AU) Member States (MS): Benin (3 confirmed cases; 0 confirmed deaths), Cameroon (18; 3), Central
African Republic (CAR) (13; 3), Congo (5; 3), Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) (319; 204), Ghana
(116; 4), Liberia (4; 0), Nigeria (753; 7) and five non-endemic MS: Egypt (4; 0), Morocco (3; 0),
Mozambique (1; 1), South Africa (5; 0) and Sudan (18; 1). This week, 47 new confirmed cases and
seven new deaths of mpox were reported from CAR and DRC.
Central African Republic: Since the last update (27 May 2022), the MoH reported 5 new confirmed
cases and one new death (CFR: 20%) of mpox. This is a 17% decrease in the number of new confirmed
cases and no percentage change in the number of new confirmed deaths compared to the last brief.
Cumulatively, 13 confirmed cases and three deaths (CFR: 23%) of mpox were reported from six
districts.

This is a 350% increase in the number of new confirmed cases compared to the last report. Cumulatively, 116 confirmed cases and four deaths (CFR: 3.4%) were reported in the country.

DRC: Since the last update (16 December 2022), the MoH reported no new confirmed cases and 10 deaths of mpox for epidemiology week 49. This is a 43% increase in the number of new deaths
compared to last update. Cumulatively, 277 confirmed cases and 198 deaths (CFR: 71.4%) were reported from 23 of the 26 provinces in the country.
Nigeria: Since the last report, (9 December 2022), NCDC reported 45 new confirmed cases and no new death from monkeypox for epidemiology week 50. This is a 29% increase in the number of new confirmed cases compared to the last report. Cumulatively, 704 confirmed and seven deaths (CFR: 1%) of monkeypox were reported from 36 states and the federal capital.

The countries reporting the majority of cases are mainly in Europe and the Americas. On 28 November 2022, the World Health Organization, under their International Classification of Disease mandate, declared the change of the name “monkeypox” to “mpox”. This change has been reflected in the current brief.

Nigeria: Since the last report, (18 November 2022), NCDC reported 35 new confirmed cases and no new death from mpox. This is a 75% increase in the number of new confirmed cases compared to the last brief. Cumulatively, 659 confirmed cases and seven deaths (CFR: 1%) were reported from 36 states and the federal capital.
Sudan: Since the last report (23 September 2022), the MoH reported seven new confirmed cases and no new deaths from mpox. This is a more than 25% increase in the number of new cases compared to the last brief. Cumulatively, 18 confirmed cases and one death (CFR: 5.5%) were reported from six states: West Darfur (8 cases; 1 death), North Darfur (3; 0), Gedaref (3; 0), Khartoum (2; 0), Central Darfur (1; 0) and Kassala (1; 0).

Cumulatively, 257 confirmed cases and 181 deaths (CFR:70.4%) were reported from 23 of the 26 provinces. Three of the provinces reported the most cases: Equateur (32 confirmed cases), Tshopo (36) and Tshuapa (126).

This week, 26 new confirmed cases and 24 new deaths of monkeypox were reported from Cameroon, DRC, Mozambique and Nigeria. Due to inconsistent updates regarding the testing status of suspect cases being reported from Member States, we are now only reporting confirmed cases and deaths and using only these numbers to calculate the CFR.

This week, a total of 331 new cases and one new death from monkeypox were reported from DRC
(286 suspected cases; 22 confirmed; 1 death), Ghana (0; 2; 0) and Nigeria (0; 21; 0 ).
DRC: Since the last report (21 October 2022), the Ministry of Health reported 308 new cases (286
suspected; 22 confirmed) and one new death (CFR: 0.3%) of monkeypox. This is a 2% and 95%
decrease in the number of new cases and deaths respectively compared to the last report.
Cumulatively 4,560 cases (4,354 suspected; 206 confirmed,) and 155 deaths (CFR: 3.6%) were
reported from 23 of the 26 provinces.
Ghana: Since the last report (28 October 2022), Ghana Health Services reported two new confirmed
cases with no new deaths of monkeypox. This is a 100% increase in the number of confirmed cases
compared to the last report. Cumulatively, 642 cases (535 suspected; 107 confirmed) and four deaths
(CFR: 0.6%) were reported.

This week, a total of 41 new cases and no new deaths of monkeypox were reported from Cameroon (6), Liberia (1) and Nigeria (31). Additionally, Benin and Liberia have updated their figures for suspect cases that were previously reported.
Benin: There are no new reported cases of monkeypox in Benin. All three previously listed suspect cases tested negative for monkeypox and have now been removed from the total cases reported for the country. Cumulatively three confirmed cases and no deaths of monkeypox were reported from Benin.
Cameroon: Since the last update (21 October 2022), the Ministry of Health (MoH) reported six new cases (3 suspected; 3 confirmed) with no new deaths of monkeypox. There is a 50% increase in the number of confirmed cases compared to the previous update. Cumulatively, 50 cases (38 suspected; 12 confirmed) and two deaths (CFR: 4%) were reported.
