Diseases know no borders because disease pathogens can be transmitted across geographical borders through movements of humans, animals and goods, especially when there is an outbreak. Critical, life-saving information and data sharing among Member States is therefore a priority to limit or eliminate such transmissions. Africa CDC implements a cross-border surveillance programme to strengthen border surveillance systems within African Union Member States and ensure linkages with the national disease surveillance systems. The programme is strengthening capacity for surveillance at Points of entry (PoE), providing specialized training for surveillance staff, and supporting operational research, knowledge sharing and management, and regional coordination.
