Dr. Justin M. Maeda is a consultant medical epidemiologist and a disease detective from Tanzania with over 12 years of experience in health care delivery, public health programme implementation, project management, epidemiology and disease intelligence, public health research, administration, and global health leadership. He currently serves as a Principal Regional Collaborating Centres (RCC Coordinator at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Before holding this post, he served as the interim Head of Divisions for Surveillance and Disease Intelligence and the division of Management and Administration at Africa CDC.
Before joining Africa CDC, Dr. Maeda served in different capacities on the African continent and within his country. These include being the medical response coordinator under the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA), consultant medical epidemiologist under the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), and a district medical officer (DMO) under the Government of Tanzania. He has vast experience in leadership, management, and administration. He received the 2014 Director’s Award on Global Health Partnership from the US CDC, in recognition of his efforts in the fight against Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Dr. Maeda holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine (MD), a master of science degree (MSc) in applied epidemiology from the University of Muhimbili, Tanzania, and a global public health leadership fellow with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has published and featured several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of epidemiology, outbreak response, health system strengthening, and global health.
